The Best Ads
There is an art to writing great classified ads. But like much else in life, art is often a learned talent. Consider this section your higher education in classified advertising.

First, remember that every solid classified ad has three components: a headline, the body text, and a request.

Headline : If you clicked this article because its title "Ad Writing Tips" beckoned, then you've just completed Classifieds Lesson One. Great classified ads call out to the reader right from the start. The headline is critical.

A headline should be creative but should not mislead. It should also reflect the best features of your business. So for example, if you're selling a ten-year-established restaurant, steer clear of headlines like "New Business for Sale". Instead, try "Booming Ten-Year Established Business" or something similar which highlights the businesses best sales points.

There is some debate with respect to putting the price in the headline. Here is an easy rule of thumb to remember: Include a price in the headline ONLY if it is a clear selling point.

Body Text : The old contradictory adage "Be Complete But Be Concise" applies. On the one hand, online classified advertising has an advantage over newspaper want ads because newspapers typically charge by the word or line. In an online ad, you can say practically as much as you like. Remember, though, that your only constraint will be your reader's boredom. Since bored readers probably won't be awake enough to answer your ad, try to balance full disclosure with brevity.

That said, clear specifications should be detailed, whether you are selling a home appliance or a business opportunity. If you are willing to haggle on price, consider using a phrase like "or best offer."

Right from the start, list the benefits: 1) price, and 2) utility. Carry that through your ad's body text, describing features in terms which relate how the business will be a veritable blessing when purchased from you.

The Request : Every good classified ad (or most any ad, for that matter) should include a direct suggestion. It may be just a brief request ("Call 1-800-555-2152"), or it may be a full-fledged sales pitch ("Consider our terrific opportunity"). Either way, don't forget to include some sort of action item for your reader to act upon.
